The artistic side: recharging my humanity

Business and organizational life (or, for that matter, any single, solitary focus in life) can eventually be deadening. I think having multiple threads in my life helps keep me fresh. Music and the other arts can be ways to help us express things for which we lack words, to keep us grounded and human instead of just machine-like. I personally care especially about music and painting.

Long-time readers of this blog have probably gotten the idea that I think it's important to read a variety of sources to expand my mind. I also think it's important to listen to a variety of types of music to expand my capacity for expressing emotions.

Today Kyle Gann blogged about types of modern classical music that may be new to many. He includes a link to Dream in White on White by John Luther Adams. Put on your headphones, settle back (the entire piece is 17 minutes long), and see what dreams you conjure up. Then see if you're refreshed, recharged, and ready to tackle that next challenge (or perhaps ready to go home and enjoy time with your family).
